Wind farm trucks asked to stay off county = roads

Semi trucks carrying 80-ton loads of wind turbine equipment from = Oklahoma=20 were refused passage through Cowley County this week, county officials = said.=20

=E2=80=9CWe concluded we should not allow them to go over the roads = because of load=20 limits,=E2=80=9D county engineer Dale Steward told county commissioners = Tuesday during a=20 regular meeting held in the courthouse assembly room.=20

Last week an unidentified trucking company called the county = clerk=E2=80=99s office=20 asking for permission to transport the heavy loads to Beaumont using = Cowley 7=20 and Cowley 5. Both are paved county roads. Both roads run north of K-15 = with=20 Cowley 7 heading through Cambridge and Cowley 5 taking traffic through = Atlanta.=20 Beaumont is about 20 miles northeast of Atlanta and the site of one of = the=20 state=E2=80=99s latest wind farms. The wind farm is being monitored by = Butler County=20 officials who have established some zoning regulations for the = energy-generating=20 machines.=20

Vehicles carrying oversized or overweight cargo must have permission = from the=20 county they plan to travel through, said county clerk Karen Brooks = Friday. The=20 truckers were stalled in Ponca City while county officials researched = load=20 limits.=20

=E2=80=9CThe truckers had to sit in Oklahoma over the = weekend,=E2=80=9D Brooks said.=20

Research showed Cowley 7 has at least one bridge with a load limit of = 10-12=20 tons, which could buckle under the pressure of an 80-ton truck. Steward = also=20 told commissioners he was concerned about the trucks\' tearing up = heat-stressed=20 asphalt.=20

Several large tractor trailers were seen passing through Winfield = this week=20 carrying large tunnel-shaped pipes, likely pieces of turbine equipment. = The=20 trucks were so lengthy, traffic at the intersection of Ninth and Main = had to=20 yield while the trucks made their spacious turns.=20

Steward and Brooks told commissioners that one of several trucking = companies=20 had up to 100 trucks it would be sending through the county. Around = 1,000 loads=20 will be carried to the Beaumont site, the company said.=20

County officials have asked the trucking companies to avoid traveling = county=20 roads and instead stick to the state highways.=20
